The Pirate Bay Remains Defiant as KickassTorrents Ready to Fade Out?

The Pirate Bay has legal liabilities for operating a platform that facilitates copyright infringement, the European Court of Justice has ruled. But the decision is not expected to cause the extinction of TPB anytime soon, which cannot be said of the shuttered KickassTorrents.

Forced out of the torrent scene since July 2016, KickassTorrents appears all set to fade out completely following reports that alleged KAT owner and operator Artem Vaulin has volunteered to travel to the United States and face the multiple cases the U.S. government has lodged before an Illinois federal court.

Essentially, Vaulin has offered to surrender, TorrentFreak reported, adding that Vaulin's defense team has confirmed negotiations are now underway with U.S. officials. "Under the right conditions Vaulin might consider traveling to the United States voluntarily, so he can resolve the pending charges," the report said.

The "voluntary surrender" was supposedly floated with a number of specific guarantees that Vaulin camp would want to secure. However, TorrentFreak said counsels for the embattled KAT operators have opted to keep mum on the matter but affirmed discussions are ongoing.

The latest development seems to indicate Vaulin is ready to strike a deal with the authorities and finally raise the white flag for KickassTorrents. Likely, Vaulin is looking to take on the same route that led to the demise of YTS/YIFY, Torrentz.eu and ExtraTorrent.cc. All were hugely popular torrenting sites but have abruptly decided to shut down permanently, the moves seen to escape further legal troubles.

But the same thing is unlikely when it comes to The Pirate Bay. In a separate opinion piece, TorrentFreak said the adverse legal ruling issued by the ECJ against TPB is not seen to impact on the site's operations. "This week's decision from the ECJ will have zero effect on the Pirate Bay's availability. For right or wrong, the site was breaking the law long before this ruling and will continue to do so until it decides otherwise," the report said.

Prior to the ECJ decision, The Pirate Bay has been blocked across the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia but the site's ship defiantly sailed on, TorrentFreak noted.

As in previous cases of takedown and blocking efforts from authorities and copyright holders, The Pirate Bay will simply carry on as if to prove that adverse court rulings will not bother the site at all.
